The Clockworks - Bumann&SOHN - Köln

Am Donnerstagabend zog es uns mit ein paar Leuten in die Stadt 50 km von Düsseldorf entfernt. Genauer gesagt ins Bumann&SOHN.
Das Bumann&SOHN liegt mitten im pulsierenden Stadtviertel Köln-Ehrenfeld. Der Laden verfügt über einen schönen Biergarten und punktet im Inneren mit seiner Einrichtung durch eine Mischung von Industriehalle (uns erinnerte es an eine alte Gießerei) und die schöne Loft-Wohnung der betuchteren Tante aus der Eifel, aber „schick“ und zeitgleich „schäbig“ genug, um sich wohlfühlen zu können. Jedenfalls unsererseits eine weitere Empfehlung zum Besuch der Stadt mit der baufälligen Kathedrale in der Mitte😉.
The Clockworks beschreiben sich selber als „die punkige Ausführung der Streets“ und das trifft es tatsächlich ganz gut. Wir würden vielleicht noch ein wenig Arctic Monkeys aus ihren Anfangszeiten hinzupacken und schon hat man eine grobe Vorstellung des Sounds der 4 Iren. Für alle vor 1990 geborenen:Heute nennt man sowas Post-Punk.
The Clockworks sind für uns der lebende Beweis, dass es gar nicht viel experimentelles Zeugs braucht, um einen tollen Sound zu liefern.
2x Gitarre - Bass - Schlagzeug - Stimme.Fertig ist der musikalische Ausflug in die irisch/britische Szene.
Um 21.15 Uhr etwa betreten die Jungs die Bühne und legen sofort los: Endgame - Lost in the Moment - Money. Es geht ungebremst in die Vollen. Wir sind mit dem ersten Ton der Clockworks, Fans und hoffen, dass am Ende des Tages noch Merch übrig bleibt.
Für uns völlig unbegreiflich, dass die Band nicht mittlerweile in ausverkauften Hallen spielt und weiterhin durch Clubs tingelt. Das freut uns natürlich ungemein, denn dies ist gut für die Clubs und ein nahes Erlebnis für alle Zuschauer:innen. Zugegebenermaßen liegt es vielleicht auch daran, dass das musikalische Repertoire der Clockworks zur Zeit auf ca. 15 Songs begrenzt ist und sich noch nicht für ein mehrstündiges Konzert eignet. Uns gefällt diese Vorgehensweise sehr, denn jeder Song der auf der Bühne dargeboten wird, holt uns ab.
Solltet ihr auf Brit/Indie/Punk abfahren, haben The Clockworks für euch einiges zu bieten und selbst wenn ihr euch bis dato nicht an diesem Genre entlang hangelt…. danach werdet ihr es lieben.
Was für ein tolles Konzert!

Thursday evening we and a couple friends were drafted into the city 50km away from Düsseldorf. More precisely into the Bumann&SOHN.
Bumann&SOHN is a small club located in the middle of colognes vibrant district Ehrenfeld. The location got a pretty nice beer garden and the inside features a cool mix between an old factory building (it reminded us of an old foundry) and the pretty Loft-Apartment of a well-offed aunt from the Eifel, but equally fancy and shabby enought to feel comfortable there. For us it's definitely another recommendation in the city with the tumbled-down cathedral in it's center 😉
The Clockworks describe themselves as an "more punk version of The Streets" and this is a quiet fitting description in our opinion. We would say you could add a little early Arctic Monkeys to that and you got a rough idea of the sound of the 4 irish guys.
To everyone born before 1990: Today we call that post-punk.
The Clockworks are the living proof that you don't need any fancy experimental stuff to create an awesome sound.
2 guitars, a bass guitar, drums and some vocals is all you need for a trip into the irish/british music scene.
Around 9:15pm the guys enter the stage and immediately start their show: Endgame - Lost in the Moment - Money. Without any hesitation they give 100%. We're already fans after the first couple riffs and hope that there will still be merchandise available after the show.
To us it's incomprehensible at this point how the band isn't already performing at sold-out shows in big music halls, but is still playing gigs in small clubs instead. Don't get us wrong, we're more than happy about small shows like this, which are not only great for the clubs, but also provide a very intimate concert experience for all the guest of the show. Admittedly the reason for that could also be the rather small musical repertoire of the band, which counts around 15 songs so far and would probably be too small to fill out a several hour long big show.
We personally appreciate their current approach for their live shows, because we got carried away by every single song.
So if you're into Brit/Indie/Punk, The Clockworks could be the right thing for you. And if you never really got into these genres, after listening to the band, you will love it!
